20 Huge Horror Movie Hits NOBODY Expected
10. Weapons
Considering that Zach Cregger's genre debut Barbarian was not only one of 2022's most talked-about horror films but also a firm box office hit - grossing $45.4 million against a $4.5 million budget - there was certainly confidence that his ambitious follow-up Weapons would do well.
But surely nobody expected it to do quite this well.
Boosted by a killer marketing campaign, rave reviews, and a mighty "A-" CinemaScore - the latter being an incredible rarity for horror - Cregger's film has grossed over $260 million globally at the time of press.
That's a flabbergasting return on its relatively modest $38 million price tag, considering the talent involved and impressive production values, and speaks to the strength of Cregger's voice as a visionary horror filmmaker who has now become a rising auteur in his own right. Needless to say, it'll be interesting to see if Cregger can pull off the three-peat with his upcoming Resident Evil adaptation, though if it's a stonking hit, it'll be considerably less surprising the third time in a row.
