No matter how much money or how many lavish effects you hurl at the screen, a movie's success can so often always come down to one thing: casting.

For instance, can you ever imagine Indiana Jones without Harrison Ford? The Dark Knight without The Joker? Iron Man without Robert Downey Jr?

Get casting right and you can print money, but get it wrong and audiences will be put off or at the very least supremely weirded out.

These roles, ranging from leading parts to supporting players and quick cameos, fly hugely in the face of what we as audiences expect, and it remains to be seen whether they'll actually work or not. A certain pop star appearing in one of 2017's biggest projects? A secret cameo from a recent Oscar nominee in the new Star Wars movie? It's all up in the air right now and could totally go either way.

Here are 20 hugely unexpected roles in upcoming movies...

20. Jeff Goldblum (Thor: Ragnarok)

The Role: Grandmaster, an Elder of the Universe and a highly intelligent being who also has a playful affinity for pitting opposing sides against each other in cosmic games.

Why It's Unexpected: Because Jeff Goldblum joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe just sounds too good to be true. Sure, the guy isn't averse to a Hollywood blockbuster every now and then, but to join a movie franchise which could mean several appearances down the line is quite the shock. Plus, it's Jeff freaking Goldblum!

Will It Work?: Absolutely. Goldblum's eccentric sensibilities make him a perfect fit for Grandmaster, and while the role is probably a small one similar to Benicio del Toro's The Collector, it'll be terrific to see him screwing around and toying with Thor.
