According to Avengers director, Joss Whedon, the scene where Black Widow battering terrorists while tied to a chair was the only thing in the original script which ended up in the finished film. In the first draft, the story was told from the point of view of the Wasp. When this idea was rejected, Whedon tried to tell the story in flashback from the point of view of the SHIELD operative, Maria Hill. This idea was cut but these scenes can be viewed on DVD.

When Whedon showed his first cut to the producers, it was criticised for being too violent, forcing the director to cut a lot of gory scenes. (Coulson's death was meant to be much more gruesome.)

Iron Man was meant to be introduced during a battle with the villain, Crimson Dynamo, but it was disregarded as unnecessary fan-service. Speaking of Iron Man, studio executives considered the film's villain to be the child of Tony Stark's rival, Obadiah Stane. In the comics, Stane's son, Ezekiel, found a way to harness Stark's technology directly into his body so he could use all of Iron Man's tech without relying on a suit of armour.
