13. The Package
This is the real under-rated gem of the conspiracy movie genre. Its a forgotten political thriller explosively directed by Andrew Davis (the guy who gave us The Fugitive) and written as a screenplay by John Bishop as if it were the inner workings of a clock with all the cogs and mechanisms that go with it. Gene Hackman is Army Sergeant Johnny Gallagher, a career military man who thinks hes been given a routine assignment to escort a rebellious rule-breaking American solider called Thomas Boyette (Tommy Lee Jones) from Europe to the United States for a court martial. But when Gallagher is attacked in a station bathroom and Boyette is freed from his custody, he decides to avoid the military disciplining for his failure by hunting down and bringing the escapee back into custody. In the process, Gallagher discovers a terrifying military conspiracy. This is a really good action thriller, a genuine diamond in the rough. Its a multiple character, heavy on the plot, no clues given sort of ride thats not for people seeking escapism but for those in search of a flick that rewards your attention and your commitment. Give it a go, youll have a great time with this film and if youve never really watched conspiracy movies before then this is a really good introduction to the twisty-turny, attention-requiring plots that usually drive them - but with a lot more action beats then is usual for the genre.

(... This is the bit where you mutter "You must be some sort of friggin' comedian if you think Midnight Run is the greatest movie ever made!")
I'm a massive junkie for 'revenge' and 'conspiracy' movies and I'm an even bigger fan of all things John Carpenter, Albert Brooks, Coen Brothers, Sidney Lumet, Paul Thomas Anderson, Tony Scott, Christopher Nolan, Michael Mann, Oliver Stone, Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante, David Fincher, Wes Anderson and Shane Meadows.
