20 Mind-Blowing Facts About The Jurassic Park Franchise

19. Spielberg Was Michael Crichton€™s Tour Guide

Over a dozen of Michael Crichton novels have been given the silver screen treatment in the last few decades, and Universal Studios quickly recognised the potential in the medical student-cum-author. When The Andromeda Strain turned Crichton into a bestselling author, several studios made overtures to the latest flavour of the month in the hope of securing the rights to his books. And it was Universal who won out over their rivals, welcoming Crichton into the family by deploying their latest wunderkind to give him a little tour of their facilities. Steven Spielberg was still several years from making his own spectacular breakthrough with Jaws when he first met Crichton in 1970, taking a break from directing episodes of Rod Serling€™s Night Gallery to show the author around the studio where they would both make the biggest impact. In fact, it was Spielberg who would encourage Crichton to put himself in the director€™s chair, with the author noting how the young filmmaker€™s natural intelligence and organisation made directing movies €œseem like something a reasonable person would do.€ Crichton soon found out for himself just how difficult a job it was, but he also found the right man to direct what would become his most celebrated work twenty years later.
