What made Leatherface even more of a liability was that the chainsaw Gunnar Hansen was brandishing was in fact very real. Though the chainsaw’s teeth were removed it was still a pretty dangerous weapon that came close to causing cast and crew grave injuries.

During the scene in which Leatherface chases Sally through the woods at night, Hansen fell and lost his grip on the running chainsaw sending it flying into the woody abyss. All Hansen could was duck, cover and hope he didn’t get eviscerated by an errant chainsaw. Luckily it landed a few inches away from Hansen and he thankfully remained intact.

For any chainsaw enthusiasts out there, the exact model used was a Poulan 245A – the preferred chainsaw of choice for mowing down groups of lost teens, apparently – though its logo was blocked out for fear of legal repercussions.
