19. Blofeld's Last Words Actually Meant Something
What with the title being Spectre, there's lots of speculation that SPECTRE's Number One, Blofeld, will appear in the next Bond film. If he does, let's hope that the character's better used than he was in his last appearance. In 1981's For Your Eyes Only, Roger Moore has finally had enough of his nemesis, so he proceeds to unceremoniously dump the evil mastermind down a factory chimney, to his presumed death. But not before he pleads for his life: "Mr Bond, we can do a deal! I'll buy you a delicatessen! In stainless steel!" Ever since, fans have scratched their heads at the naffness of Blofeld's death, but also the meaning behind his last words. Are they just the icing on the awful cake that was this scene, or did they actually have some relevance? The phrase actually comes from 1920s Mafia slang - a delicatessen with stainless steel counter-tops would be the best kind of delicatessen (a cleaner environment than wooden chopping boards), therefore making it a good bribe. Apparently Bond producer Albert Broccoli liked the phrase so gave it to that well-known 20s Mafioso Blofeld.
