15. V/H/S Viral (2014)

The V/H/S series, after only two films, is already a horror staple and, as with most anthology horrors, some short gems can often be found therein. The first film had so much promise, largely based on a brilliant international trailer, but the anthology of found footage shorts didnt really hold up even with genre stalwarts Ti West and Adam Wingard involved. The second film fared far better and, with Wingard again providing the framing device, directors such as Gareth Evans and Eduardo Sanchez made their pieces suit the found footage genre in a way the first film often lacked. The third in the series perhaps doesnt have the name directors of previous entries but it does have Marcel Sarmiento who directed D is for Dogfight from the more miss than hit ABCs of Death. Initial reviews from horror festivals havent been great with a lack of scares being the biggest problem and this can be seen when comparing the trailer for this one to the trailer for the first film. Along with Sarmiento though there is Gregg Bishops Dante the Great about a lowly magician blessed with the cape of Houdini and Parallel Monsters which comes from Nacho Vigalondo, the man behind Timecrimes. This might not be the viral hit the producers want but the V/H/S movies are usually worth a watch and any film that pairs Sarmiento with Vigalondo is certainly worthy of investigation.
