20 Most Anticipated Sci-Fi Movies Arriving In 2026

3. 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple

The Mandalorian Season 3
Sony Pictures Releasing

UK release date: 16th January

Danny Boyle reignited his presumed-dead 28 series this year with 28 Years Later, set - you guessed it - 28 years after the original film, and following a new cast of characters who have made their home on Lindisfarne. The movie manages to capture everything that was good about the original film while advancing the journey beyond mere survival, and looked set to be one of the best standalone zombie pictures of the century, until it hit us with a cliffhanger ending.

Since then, we have been waiting on tenterhooks for part two, The Bone Temple, written by Alex Garland, directed by Candyman’s Nia DaCosta, and featuring a marauding gang of Jimmy Saviles led by Jack O’Connell’s Sir Jimmy Crystal.

Spike (Alfie Williams), the young hero of the previous instalment, runs into these Teletubby-coded Jimmys right before the credits in 28 Years Later, kick-starting the next chapter with a WTF moment that could easily have sunk the series. And yet, it has made us keener than ever to stick with the franchise and follow it through to what Boyle has suggested might end up being a trilogy. Not only that, but it seems the long-rumoured return of Cillian Murphy’s Jim is on the way, and god only knows what’ll happen when the disparate characters we’ve been following finally converge on Dr. Ian Kelson’s (Ralph Fiennes) Bone Temple.
