20 Most Controversial Horror Movie Scenes Of All Time

9. Frankenstein - Little Girl in the Lake (1931)

Frankenstein must have been a real spine chiller for audiences back in the 1930s. Sewed together from different parts of different people and with a murderer's brain to boot, The Monster was reanimated by Dr Frankenstein to disastrous results After killing Dr Frankenstein's mentor Dr Waldman, the monster breaks free of his restraints and wanders around the countryside for a bit. He meets up with a little girl who, astonishingly, isn't repulsed by his physical appearance. In fact she asks him to play a game with her, throwing flowers into the pond to watch them float. When the flowers run out, the Monster gets the bright idea to turf the little girl into the pond, reasoning that she will float like the flowers. Unfortunately this case of brain farts leads to the little girl drowning and the monster gloomily walks away knowing instinctively he has done something terrible. Watching any child drown in a film is horrible (see also Don't Look Now) but it must have been quite an experience for 1930s audiences to watch the above sequence. It was indeed highly controversial and excised from some prints of the film.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
