20 Most Cringe-Worthy One-Liners In Movie History
15. "Dad?" - The Godfather Part III
The Godfather Part III is universally regarded as the worst film in the illustrious trilogy, but overall, it's still a pretty decent film if taken on its own merits.
However, that didn't stop Francis Ford Coppola from blowing the film's most important scene, by hiring his own daughter, Sofia, at the last minute to play Michael Corleone's daughter Mary (after the originally-cast Winona Ryder fell ill unexpectedly).
After Mary is fatally shot, she lets out a single word, "Dad?", before slumping over dead, a line that injects some needless cringe into the scene because of Sofia Coppola's weirdly quizzical delivery and the fact it didn't need to be said at all.
The scene would've been much more powerful if Mary just dropped dead, but instead there's this weirdly melodramatic moment, complete with a comical slump to the side after she speaks. It's bad writing, acting and direction all conspiring to derail an otherwise heartbreaking movie moment. At least Al Pacino sells the Hell out of it.
