As of late Tim Burton has let his loony ideas flourish to an unwelcome degree, but back when Batman Returns was released he was in his prime.
The gothic tone of the movie was incredible, and it matched the great tone of his first movie, which perfectly capitalised on Michael Keaton's uneasy, beautifully broken portrayal of Bruce Wayne. This was truly one of the first dark superhero films, so it certainly deserves this high standing.
