20 Most Groundbreaking Horror Movies Of All Time

6. The Evil Dead (1981)

What's it about? A group of young university friends head out into the depths of the woods to spend a weekend in an isolated cabin for spring break. There, tucked away in the basement they discover a Sumerian version of the Book of the Dead and a tape recorder with strange incantations on it, and before long demonic entities emerge from the woods and start to possess the hapless holiday makers. What makes it groundbreaking? The hall of fame for legendary horror directors including Tobe Hooper, Wes Craven and John Carpenter wouldn't be complete without Sam Raimi, and with The Evil Dead he took the demonic possession motif in entirely new directions. The completely over the top nature of the gore and shocks was ramped up even further with the sequels, where an element of tongue in cheek parody crept in to great effect. Few films have achieved such a notable cult status.
