Sex and horror movies go together like cheese and crackers. From the heaving vamp bosoms of old Hammer Horrors to the more recent ‘have sex and you die’ trope that slasher movies ushered in, it’s hard to think of a horror that doesn’t have some kind of sexual aspect.
Director David Robert Mitchell upped the sex and horror ante with his 2014 low budget indie horror It Follows about a teenage girl stalked by a malevolent entity that attached itself to her a rather regrettable sexual encounter. Yep, a sexually transmitted ghost and the kind of STD that can’t be cleared up by a quick visit to the GUM clinic and a course of tablets.
Praised for its originality while paying a stylized but subtle homage to horror movies of the 1980s, it’s been hailed as one of the creepiest and most effective horrors of the decade.
