British director James Whale’s seminal 1931 film has gone down in cinema history as one of the most influential horrors of all time.

Adapted from Mary Shelley’s gothic novel of the same name, it was the fourth film to give Frankenstein the big screen treatment but marked the first appearance of the monster (played by classic horror actor Boris Karloff) in a non-silent film.

Since the weary eyes of modern-day horror buffs have been subjected to the likes of A Serbian Film and The Human Centipede, whether Frankenstein is still as ‘gruesome’ and ‘chill-producing’ today as it reportedly was back in the ‘30s is questionable but the countless sequels, remakes and parodies it has spawned since its release almost ninety years ago are testament to its enduring influence.

Plus it gave us one of the most iconic horror movie lines ever uttered, currently ranked at number forty-nine on the American Film Institute’s greatest movie quotes of all time in fact. Everybody now: ‘It’s alive! It’s alive!’.
