16. Pan’s Labyrinth
Rating: 95%
Set in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, Guillermo del Toro’s dark gothic fantasy Pan’s Labyrinth takes place in an imaginary world populated by strange, mythical creatures and conjured up by its young protagonist Ofelia to escape her brutal reality.
An informal sequel of sorts to his similarly themed earlier horror The Devil’s Backbone which was also about childhood in the shadow of war, Pan’s Labyrinth went on to receive six Academy Award nominations in 2007 and won three for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Makeup.
A third film named 3993 was in the works and intended to round off del Toro’s informal Spanish Civil War trilogy but was put on a back burner when he went into production with Hellboy II: The Golden Army, though he did recently state he still hopes to tackle the project in the future. Fingers crossed.
