20 Most Highly Rated Horror Movies On Rotten Tomatoes
17. Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn
Rating: 98%
In a relatively rare instance of a sequel being better than its predecessor, Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn scores a whole 3% more than the original Evil Dead’s 95% Rotten Tomatoes rating.
Let’s give the inaugural Evil Dead credit where credit is due though. It’s a brilliant low-budget horror that introduced us to the talents of Sam Raimi (not to mention Bruce Campbell and his tremendously chiselled chin), but despite moments of black comedy it did kind of take itself a bit more seriously than subsequent Evil Dead films did.
With Evil Dead 2, however, Raimi ramped up the comedy and slapstick gore and basically parodied his own movie which resulted in a superior – if only slightly – second outing. It really helped the three-part franchise find its feet and spawned the wildly funny trilogy conclusion Army of Darkness and the rather brilliant TV show Ash vs. Evil Dead.
