20 Most Hotly Anticipated Movies Of Summer 2019 - Ranked

5. Brightburn

Brightburn Elizabeth Banks
Sony Pictures Releasing

Release Date: May 24

Billed As: A couple (Elizabeth Banks and David Denman) take in a child (Jackson A. Dunn) from another world who crash-lands on Earth. They try to raise him to use his powers for good, but he turns out to be something much more sinister than a hero.

Hype: With horror doing exceptionally well over the past couple of years, Brightburn certainly looks like it’s going to join the ranks as the trailer frames it as a genuinely scary and original horror.

James Gunn is also listed as a producer and is featured prominently in the advertising due to his cousin Mark and brother Brian having written the movie. Whilst Gunn is more commonly associated with the visually stunning Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, he definitely isn’t a stranger to horror having originally started out making a Troma movie and writing and directing Slither (2006).

After Hereditary’s slow burn terror last summer, it’s hard to know if anything is ever going to live up to it. But Brightburn definitely seems like an important movie to look out for if you’re looking for a good scare.
