18. "Look At Me!" - The Dark Knight

There was already a lot of audience anxiety going into The Dark Knight considering the untimely death of The Joker himself, Heath Ledger, many months before the film's release. Then the movie happened.

Ledger gave a masterful, Oscar-winning performance, the intensity of which was typified no better than when Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) watches a video tape of the Clown Prince of Crime preparing to murder a Batman imitator.

He tells the man, "Look at me", and when he doesn't comply, he repeats his request in an almost unrecognisably deep, bestial tone.

Anyone who saw the movie with a packed crowd on opening night will remember how this moment totally sucked the air out of the cinema, bringing everything to a standstill and serving as Ledger's most singularly horrifying moment as The Joker.
