20 Most Oscar Nominated Movies Ever - Ranked From Worst To Best

5. The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring (2001)

Nominations: 13

Wins: 4 (Best Cinematography, Best Makeup, Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects)

It's the one that kick-started a billion-dollar box office phenomenon, and against the odds also scored a slew of Oscar nominations (which it finally made good on with Return of the King's 11-win sweep two years later).

A lengthy but richly absorbing introduction to Middle Earth, Fellowship isn't the best of the three core movies but it is nevertheless a marvel of astonishing world-building, capturing the spirit of Tolkein's source material with incredible heart and passion.

The apparently "unfilmable" project made it to the screen with all of the big-budget, well-cast fervour it deserved, and at this point it's really beyond superlatives: the results speak loudly for themselves.
