20 Most Oscar Nominated Movies Ever - Ranked From Worst To Best
18. Chicago (2002)
Nominations: 13
Wins: 6 (Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Sound)
Rob Marshall's enormously popular musical adaptation is a visual and aural feast that benefits from a gonzo Catherine Zeta-Jones performance and a litany of catchy, toe-tapping tunes.
Granted, it's not oozing substance, Richard Gere's performance isn't great and that ventriloquist musical number is embarrassingly terrible, but it's exactly the sort of effervescent, vibrant film America needed at the time, even if all of its fellow nominees - Gangs of New York, The Hours, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Pianist - were arguably much better films.
It lacks the nuance of the genre's better efforts, but it's a light, fun time at the movies with a clear amount of care put into its production. Just not necessarily a great Best Picture winner.
