20 Most Rewatchable Movies Of The 21st Century

17. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011)

Paramount Pictures

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol is a ridiculous film, and it knows it. The villain wants to nuke the Earth into dust on a whim and there are constant references to the Mission: Impossible series' reliance on face masks so realistic that they can transform the wearer into different actors.

That's what sets Brad Bird's film apart from the previous entries in the franchise - this one openly recognises the absurdity, then gets on with crafting some of the most fluidly exhilarating set-pieces of this century (and maybe, just maybe, the best of them all, in the jaw-dropping Burj Khalifa sequence). Ghost Protocol's cast doesn't quite reach the starry heights of MI3, but by simplifying the story and actually keeping the central team alive in this one, there's more chance for the sheer theatrics to be complemented by a sense of audience-friendly camaraderie.

Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton and crazy ol' Tom Cruise make for one likeable band of misfits, and the constant threat of losing one of them gives MI4 an edge over its predecessors.
