20 Most Rewatchable Sci-Fi Movies Of The 21st Century

12. District 9

District 9 Sharlto Copley
TriStar Pictures

Directed by Neil Bloomkanp of, er, Chappie fame (look they can’t all be classics, and someone needed to make the Die Antwoord movie), this sleeper hit from 2009 is a rare case of the sci fi genre put horror to shame in its effective utilization of the found footage format.

What’s that? You forgot the flick was presented as a documentary?

Yeah that’s because the gimmick is all-but-dropped, outside of some neat camera tricks near its close, about twenty minutes into the flick. So all we’re left with is an incisive satire about class relations and racial tensions in South Africa, a gory and intense thrill ride for action movie lovers, and some incredible acting from Sharlto Copley as the film’s reformed bigot hero—who wouldn’t want to revisit this modern classic?
