After he thoroughly traumatised audiences with Hereditary, it was little surprise that Ari Aster's follow-up Midsommar was a deeply screwed up affair from first minute to last.

This is a movie that begins with a murder-suicide and ends with ritualistic murder, and neither of them are even the most WTF moment in the entire film.

The most tough-to-watch scene occurs mid-way through the movie when Dani (Florence Pugh) and her friends witness the ritualistic suicide of two of the Swedish commune's older residents.

The first leaps from the cliff and has their face destroyed by a rock (pictured above), with Aster giving viewers a gnarly close-up of the mangled remains.

The second participant misses the rock, and so one of the commune members consequently smashes their head to pieces with a gigantic hammer, which again, we see in grotesque close-up.

Between the nauseating sound editing and horrifically convincing practical effects, this is easily the most unsettling graphic violence featured in any major movie this year.
