3. It Was All A Video Game - Serenity

When the Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway-starring drama Serenity was pushed out of 2018's awards season and released in early January, most simply assumed it wasn't quite up to par for the Oscars, but would probably still be an entertaining ride.

And while Serenity was entertaining, few could've expected quite what Oscar-nominated writer-director Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things) would've served up.

In short, this is one of the greatest so-bad-it's-good movies released all year, a knowingly trashy airport novel about a fisherman, Baker Dill (Matthew McConaughey), who is approached by a beautiful woman (Anne Hathaway) to murder her husband (Jason Clarke).

But as it turns out in the movie's third act, Baker's reality is actually a video game, and he's an A.I. character based on the likeness of a real person, John Mason, whose son Patrick (Rafael Sayegh) created the game as a tribute to his father. Yup.

It's completely and utterly demented, and just about nobody saw the twist coming ahead of the film's release. In the very least, it's not a boring movie, but quite undeniably a wonderfully terrible one.

And before we move on to #2, know that MAJOR SPOILERS will follow for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker...
