19. John Connor Dies - Terminator: Dark Fate

The sixth Terminator film began as it meant to go on, by diminishing the importance of the original two Terminator movies, all while desperately trying to fashion itself as a "real" sequel to them.

The very first scene in the film left fans fuming from the outset, as in 1998, several years after the events of T2, Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) and John Connor (Edward Furlong) - represented here through impressive digital de-aging - are attacked by another T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) sent back through time.

Sadly, this attack is finally successful, with John being gunned down in cold blood and consequently setting up Sarah's arc as a "Terminator hunter" for the rest of the movie.

It's a shocking scene, no question, but given how thoroughly lazy and unimaginative the rest of Dark Fate is, it ultimately feels like a cynical move that actively thumbs its nose at the first two movies.

Unsurprisingly, word quickly got out and most fans stayed well away, causing it to tank at the box office, and possibly killing the franchise for good - or at least for a good while.
