20 Movie Scenes That Are Totally Flawless

5. Carl And Ellie - Up (2009)

The Boondock Saints Willem Dafoe
Pixar

It wouldn't be fair to make a list like this and not include the timeless opening to Pixar's classic Up. A heartbreaking montage that reduces even the most seasoned of movie fans to tears, the film opens by charting the life and enduring relationship of Carl and Ellie, two like-minded souls bound by their love of adventure, nature and imagination.

We get to see their highs and lows, including the wedding, the building of their new family home, and the devastating moment where an unspoken tragedy strikes Ellie's pregnancy. As the montage builds, the two grow old and Carl realises Ellie never got to visit Paradise Falls, the place of her dreams. Before he can do anything to remedy this, Ellies passes away.

One of the most emotionally affecting scenes in cinema, Up's opening effortlessly tells a sweeping story about love and missed opportunities without a single line of dialogue, and makes it clear what Carl's motivations are for his future adventure to his beloved wife's favourite place.
