20 Movie Talents We Lost In 2017
1. John Hurt
Widely regarded as one of Britain’s finest thespian talents,
multi-award-winning actor John Hurt received his first BAFTA nomination for his
role as wrongly convicted Welshman Timothy Evans in 10 Rillington Place and
later went on to secure BAFTAS for his portrayal of Quentin Crisp in the 1975
TV movie The Naked Civil Servant, heroin addict Max in Midnight Express and as
John Merrick in David Lynch’s historical drama The Elephant Man.
Hurt’s other notable film roles include Kane in Ridley Scott’s seminal sci-fi Alien – in which he became the franchise’s first ever chestburster victim – and Nineteen Eighty-Four’s protagonist Winston Smith while he also lent his voice acting skills to films such as Watership Down, The Black Cauldron and Dogville.
More recently Hurt starred as Professor Trevor Bruttenholm in Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy films, wandmaker Garrick Ollivander in the Harry Potter films and as playwright Christopher Marlowe in Jim Jarmusch’s vampire movie Only Lovers Left Alive.
