20 Movies Every Nerd Must See Before They Die

8. Gattaca (1997)

A frighteningly prescient sci-fi drama in an age where genetic discrimination is becoming an increasingly controversial premise, Gattaca asks thought provoking questions about science's potential to impact our daily lives, and a possible future that might lie ahead for the human race. Ethan Hawke is fantastic as the put-upon protagonist, a rare naturally-born human who is discriminated against for not being genetically engineered, but the real highlight here is how convincing this future world seems: it's entirely believable that society could venture this way, given the prejudices that already exist in contemporary society. Gattaca has also been credited with reigniting the genetics debate, which continues to be controversial to this day.
