20 Movies Every Nerd Must See Before They Die

13. Weird Science (1985)

Though certainly on the weaker end of John Hughes' run of 80s comedies, there's a rough-hewn charm to Weird Science that's difficult to fight against, and the key word here is "weird". Two nerdy teenagers are sick of being bullied and failing with the ladies, so through an hilariously improbable Frankenstein-esque experiment, they manage to create the perfect woman, Lisa (the gorgeous Kelly Le Brock), but get far more than they bargained for. For all of the film's flaws (namely that it's goofy as all hell), it's never boring: from the opening experiment to a young Robert Downey Jr. playing a mega-douche, people getting frozen, Bill Paxton getting turned into a pile of actual crap, missiles crashing into houses and a dangerous biker gang showing up in the middle of a raucous party, it continually ratchets up the insanity factor. It's never as entertaining to watch as when you're a 14-year-old, but it's still an amusing 80s sex comedy all the same, a quintessential nerd classic.
