20 Most Original Movies Since 2000

10. The Wayward Cloud (2005)

The Movie: Describing the plot to The Wayward Cloud is an almost impossible task, since it doesn't really have one - there's a water shortage in Taiwan and people are encouraged by the state to drink watermelon juice instead. A man and a woman meet and enter into a relationship, and a series of increasingly bizarre set-pieces follow. What Makes It Original: Tsai Ming-liang's experimental movie flirts with surrealism from start to finish, throwing in everything from odd musical numbers to explicit scenes of sex which range from the obscene to the outrageous. What The Wayward Cloud deliberately lacks in narrative and dialogue it makes up for with its audacious, often darkly humourous observations on love and life, urban alienation and romance in the modern world.
