The Movie: A young boy named Mason (Ellar Coltrane) grows up in Texas, experiencing the trials and tribulations of childhood as he comes to terms with the divorce of his parents, his mother's new boyfriends and life in and out of school. As he grows into adolescence he discovers his passion for photography and prepares himself for life in college. What Makes It Original: Filmed over a period of 12 years and using the same actors throughout, Boyhood has quite rightly been hailed as one of the most groundbreaking movies in the history of cinema. Playing loose with the concept, director Richard Linklater worked closely with his central actors and allowed the screenplay to unfold over the course of filming, sometimes only finalising a script the night before shooting. The result is less a traditional coming-of-age movie or a melodrama and more a gently unraveling slice of life in which the ups and downs arrive without fanfare - small moments, it seems, can be every bit as cinematic as life-changing epiphanies.
