20 Perfect Scenes In God-Awful Horror Movies
12. The Game Of Pretend - Vivarium
Lorcan Finnegan's sci-fi mind-bender follows a couple, Tom (Jesse Eisenberg) and Gemma (Imogen Poots), who find themselves trapped inside an empty neighbourhood. The pair are informed shortly after they'll be released after caring for a mysterious boy (Senan Jennings).
Vivarium sets out to be a thought-provoking psychological horror, but ends up feeling like a frustrating, drawn-out episode of The Twilight Zone, minus the payoff. While the premise is intriguing, the execution is painfully slow and monotonous.
Just as viewers find themselves nodding off, they'll be jolted awake during one particular scene. When Gemma learns The Boy encountered somebody in the supposedly barren neighbourhood, she's desperate to learn who. When The Boy refuses to elaborate, Gemma asks him to play The Game of Pretend. After The Boy pretends to be a dog and Tom, Gemma asks him to impersonate the person he met that day.
With no warning, The Boy develops throat sacs, which swell and throb as he lets out inhuman cries, shaking Gemma to her core.
Though Jennings does a superb job in this scene, Poots also should be commended, since she comes across as someone who has beared witness to an indescribable horror.
