20 Post-Apocalyptic Movies You Must See Before You Die
7. Time Of The Wolf (2004)
Completely different to any of the other post-apocalyptic films on this list, Michael Haneke's bleak meditation on the end of all things, Time of the Wolf, certainly gets points for realism. Haneke, of course, is renowned for his bleak and uncompromising films that set out to subvert cinematic expectations; this one is no different. Far from an easy watch, it sets out to chronicle the end of the world after a global crisis forces a French family into the wild. After the murder of her husband, the movie hones in on a mother - played by Isabelle Huppert - and her children as they attempt to survive in the aftermath of a disaster (one which has left much of the world's water supply poisoned). Naturalism is the aim here, as the film explores social systems and conventions in the wake of civilisation's end. It is not an "entertaining" picture, nor does it ever purport to be. Still, it's one you're unlikely to forget.
Sam Hill is an ardent cinephile and has been writing about film professionally since 2008. He harbours a particular fondness for western and sci-fi movies.
