It's an unfortunate part of Cannes every year that there are some genuine gems in the sidebar competitions - like Critics' Week and Director's Fortnight - where some of the coming year's best indie and under-appreciated marvels will get their first screening.

Sadly, they will usually also play at the same time as something essential in the main Competition. And no matter how much you know that the alternative will enrich your life a hell of a lot more, you end up sitting through yet another self-important Malick or a Van Sant that shouldn't be anywhere near Cannes.

And every time, a little part of you dies inside; particularly when you hear the reviews the little gem is getting.
