It's been said time and time again that purely adult-skewing films have been struggling immensely at the box office in recent years, and The Alto Knights provides just further proof of that.

Despite starring Robert De Niro in not one but two roles, and being penned by Goodfellas writer Nicholas Pileggi, this crime thriller was a gigantic bomb, netting just $9.6 million on a $50 million budget.

This fate was painfully clear from the moment that Warner Bros. decided to call it The Alto Knights - a terrible title that tells Joe Public absolutely nothing about the film from a passing glance.

As boring and uninspired as generic crime thriller titles might be, they do ultimately get more eyeballs on a project, and this is definitely a case where a more accessible title would've boosted the box office at least a little. Of course, it didn't help that even cinephiles were likely deterred by mixed-to-negative reviews, ensuring many likely waited to watch The Alto Knights on streaming - if they even did at all.
