Road House is yet another of those classic movies that's just so distinctly associated with the era of its creation that a remake always seemed like a pretty silly idea.

The original 1989 Patrick Swayze-starring action film has endured as something of a campy cult classic over the decades, because where else can you see the guy from Dirty Dancing rip a dude's throat out and roundhouse kick him into a river?

It's such an aggressively '80s movie in its very bones, and one that's still a blast to watch today, that remaking it seemed downright foolish, and yet director Doug Liman did it anyway, with Jake Gyllenhaal taking up the role of bouncer Dalton.

Now credit where it's due - the new Road House sensibly doesn't take itself particularly seriously and Jakked Gyllenhaal is a hoot in the lead role.

But this new take also lacks the personality of its predecessor while toning down the original's grittier violence for more workmanlike, digitally assisted action sequences.

It's not bad, but did you remember much about it a week later?

It nevertheless did well enough on Amazon Prime that the streamer has already commissioned a sequel, with Ilya Naishuller (Nobody) set to direct and Dave Bautista eyed to appear alongside Gyllenhaal.
