16. The Totally Nonsensical Twist - I Know What You Did Last Summer
The new I Know What You Did Last Summer was a woefully disappointing attempt to give the slasher franchise a legacy sequel treatment in the vein of 2022's Scream, and while the film as a whole is aggressively mediocre, it absolutely collapses in the final stretch with that twist.
After Stevie (Sarah Pidgeon) is revealed to be the main killer and apparently dealt with, we find out she had an accomplice - none other than one of the series' original main characters, Ray Bronson (Freddie Prinze Jr.).
As it turns out, Ray has basically been driven murderously insane by the town's attempts to erase the original 1997 fisherman killings from its history, as part of a wider mission to gentrify Southport.
Though the gentrification angle is definitely interesting, Ray's sudden switch from legacy hero to crazed psychopath is baffling and unconvincing, and ultimately tantamount to character assassination - quite literally, considering Ava (Chase Sui Wonders) kills him at the end.
Let's just say this - there's good reason that the Scream franchise never made one of its O.G. characters a surprise Ghostface. It would've gone beyond jumping the shark.
