14. The Terrible Villain Subplot - F1

Fantastic Four

Because a film about high-octane competitive racing apparently couldn't generate enough drama by itself, F1 had to introduce an awful villain subplot, where APXGP board member Peter Banning (Tobias Menzies) reveals that he's been scheming to sabotage the team from the jump in order to force its sale.

Furthermore, Banning tries to convince racer Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) to let APXGP fail by offering him a principal role on the team following the sale, because he's just not enough of a scumbag already.

It's all very corny and moldy, though, and ultimately just pads out the film's already excessive runtime, when the focus should firmly be on the white-knuckle thrill of the race.

Did anyone come to an F1 movie to watch boring subplots about moustache-twirling bean-counters? It's painfully boring stuff and clearly should've been cut during the scripting process, ensuring we all got to go home about 10 minutes earlier.

Thankfully F1 is otherwise a terrifically entertaining racing flick, so it just about gets away with it.
