20 Sci-Fi Movies EVERY Film Fan Should Have Seen

3. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

Close Encounters Of The Third Kind
Universal Pictures

One of the two most famous alien movies of all time - and unquestionably the most family-friendly - you'd be hard-pressed to find any film fan anywhere who doesn't love E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial... unless, y'know, you haven't seen it - in which case, why?

Released in 1982, the Steven Spielberg film documents the relationship between a young boy and a visitor from another planet who become unlikely friends after encountering each other in the former's backyard. By all rights a blockbuster, it kind of feels wrong to refer to it like that when it's honestly so much more than that title could ever give it credit for.

Like all of Spielberg's films, the special effects were second-to-none as the cute alien puppet was both convincing and very, very adorable. However, like his very best, the visuals only served an even better story, as E.T.'s greatest strength was the classic tale of friendship between Eliot and this alien that made the young boy feel far less alienated than anything else in his life.

Science fiction doesn't have to be scary, and E.T. proved that to perfection, giving the world one of its most heartwarming films. And if you haven't seen this timeless classic already, please stop what you're doing right now and go watch it. In fact, if you have seen it, you may as well do the same thing.
