20 Serial Killer Movies You Must See Before You Die

2. Se7en (1995)

Se7en, arguably David Fincher's greatest film to date, hones in on two detectives - one old, one new - played by Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt, as they attempt to solve a bizarre case concerning a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins (those being pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and sloth) as his modus operandi. Written by Andrew Kevin Walker, Se7en is a gruelling, nihilistic marvel of a picture that pulls you in from its very first scene and refuses to let go until its final shocking denouement. Aside from its deft and clever plotting, Se7en also works as a deconstruction of the police procedural, whilst Freeman and Pitt - as Detectives Somerset and Mills - share wonderful chemistry and offer up two of their finest screen performances. Se7en is a seriously dark movie, made more so by its purposely dank cinematography and cynical view on modern life. It is a movie without hope, and all the better for it.
