20 Serial Killer Movies You Must See Before You Die

17. Man Bites Dog (1992)

A downright bizarre motion picture experience (or experiment), Belgian "comedy" picture Man Bites Dog takes the form of a mockumentary in which a crew of filmmakers follow a serial killer as he goes about his daily business. If that's not a synopsis to get you intrigued in the mechanics of this particular serial killer foray, what is? Man Bites Dog is unlike any movie in the serial killer sub-genre, and was made on an incredibly small budget by a group of student filmmakers. The most disturbing aspect of the picture, perhaps, is in the way that it chronicles not just the habits of the serial killer at its centre, but the people observing him; at first they watch his antics objectively, but before long they're caught up in the chaos and begin to influence the scenario. The film is an interesting comment on the nature of documentary filmmaking at large, as subjects are unwittingly egged on - by way of a camera - to "perform."
