20 Spy Movies You Must See Before You Die

4. The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)

Daniel Craig, Casino Royale, James Bond
Universal Pictures

Everyone has their own favourite Bourne movie, although most would likely agree that the third picture - The Bourne Ultimatum - marks a high point for not only the series on the whole, but for action/spy cinema in general. In short, this film whacks you over the head with whatever it can find lying around the room, resulting in some of the most dizzying fight sequences ever committed to celluloid.

The Bourne franchise landed at a time when James Bond was doing everything it could to alienate its fanbase, of course, which ultimately led us to what should have been Paul Greengrass' trilogy-ending entry (who's already forgotten that there was a fourth Jason Bourne film? If you've never seen it then really don't bother).

Ultimatum is remembered today for its innovative shaky camera work, of course, but there is more to this movie than just documentary-style fight scenes. Matt Damon, reprising his role as the conflicted hero of the title, offers up some of his best acting work, whilst the story - which finally reveals the truth about Bourne's association with Treadstone - is consistently engaging and ethically complex.
