20 Terrible Movies That Do NOT Deserve Their Fresh Rotten Tomatoes Scores
4. Ichi The Killer
Score: 64% (Average Score: 6.10/10)
Consensus: Ichi the Killer is a thoroughly shocking gorefest that will surely entertain those with strong stomachs and a penchant for brutal violence.
Sometimes, a shocking and violent film seems to get mistaken for a powerful, well-done work by reviewers, and therefore it gets a fresh score. Case in point: this appallingly bad crime movie from Takashi Miike.
Yes, Ichi the Killer is shocking and out-there as all hell, but that doesn't make it a good movie. If one judges the film based not on how shocking it is but based on that small thing called quality, then it is a terrible, terrible movie in every way imaginable.
The cinematography is migraine-inducing, the story is an abominable mess, it's appallingly distasteful and misogynist, and it's a movie without even an iota of wit, heart, emotional depth, narrative skill, or anything in particular, really.
Simply put, there is no explaining how this anything even approaching a fresh score, especially when you consider that some far better works of extreme cinema that actually have something to say - like Gaspar Noe's Irreversible or Lars Von Trier's The House That Jack Built - have rotten scores on the site.
Deserved Score: 20-40%.
