16. Frank Herbert Actually Liked The David Lynch Adaption

David Lynch’s famous 1984 flop was unsurprisingly not well received by critics - including the late, great Roger Ebert - and even some hardcore book fans trashed the flick. David Lynch himself has even recounted many times his distaste for the work and the restrictive pressure the studio put on him at the time.

Frank Herbert was no such naysayer, however. Saying to Entertainment Technology magazine at the time, “The story is there. They saved the story. It's all there. That's what the author worries about… It's a different language on that screen and if they’re adroit and sensitive about picking their visual metaphors, the story comes off the screen”.

Herbert even expressed his love for the controversial ‘weirding modules’, a Lynchian invention of sonic weaponry meant to replace the so-called ‘desert kung-fu’ Lynch didn’t like. Herbert loved how faithful the 1984 adaptation largely was, but it was because of this very faithfulness...
