20 Things You Didn’t Know About For Your Eyes Only (1981)

18. We’re Painting The Buildings White

Although Hector Gonzales (Stefan Kalipha) lives in a sumptuous villa near Madrid, Spain, the hitman’s party house was actually filmed at the Villa Sylva in Kanoni above Corfu Town.

The subsequent car chase between James Bond and Melina Havelock in the Citroën 2CV and Gonzales’s men, who pursue them in menacing black Peugeot 504s, was filmed nearby, in the village of Pagoi, heading downhill.

In order to convince the audience that the car chase was taking place in the Spanish town of San Martin, the filmmakers arranged for several of the buildings in Pagoi to be painted white. The residents did not seem to mind and, as a further sign of their hospitality, the village is home to the Spiros Bond 007 Café-Bar, which commemorates James Bond’s time on the Greek island.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
