20 Things You Didn’t Know About Galaxy Quest

7. The Film Was Recut To Be More Family Friendly

When Bob Gordon took over screenwriting duties, the last thing on his mind was putting together a family movie.

Director Dean Parisot and star Tim Allen have both commented that the original tone of the film was intended to be darker and more violent, with the Protector's crash landing in the convention at the climax killing a fair few attendees and Gwen openly trying to seduce the villains - but test screenings favoured a lighter approach.

The studio also put pressure on Parisot to strip the worst of the swearing out of the final cut of the film so it could sidestep a more mature rating and therefore be seen by more people.

What that means is that Parisot basically did his job but made it crystal clear what the original line had been. At the beginning of the film, Tommy's line "You are so full of sh*t, man!" was dubbed over with "You are so full of it, man!"

Similarly, the ‘chompers’ scene near the end of the film originally saw Weaver say “f*ck that!!” upon seeing the giant mashers blocking the corridor. The line was dubbed with “screw that!!” but the shot still focuses on Weaver, clearly showing that she’s saying something different.
