20 Things You Didn’t Know About Galaxy Quest

It’s almost redundant to ask the question, given that the entire film is a warm rib on Trek, including its cast, characters, fans, stories and general tropes - but how many references do you know of in the movie to specific instances of Star Trek trivia or lore?

For a start, Gwen bemoans the fact that her TV Guide interview featured "six paragraphs of my boobs and how they fit into my suit". Something very similar happened to Star Trek Voyager actor Jeri Ryan, whose obvious physical attributes and skintight catsuit were the source of too much media catcalling during her time on the show.

When Tommy mocks Alexander for holding his tracker upside down on the rock planet, the movie was referring to Star Trek’s first season, where Leonard Nimoy was caught holding his tricorder upside down because he didn’t know what the prop was for.

The scene where Jason overhears gossip about how the show’s cast are nobodies who can’t stand him was a direct reference to what happened to William Shatner at a Trek convention in 1986.

Finally, Alexander’s jibe at Jason for stealing his lines and cutting him from episode two also referred to Shatner’s reputation for being a selfish egotist during the lifetime of the original show.
