20 Things You Didn’t Know About Goldfinger (1964)

16. “Oh! You Must Excuse Oddjob, Mr Bond!”

Goldfinger, James Bond

During filming of the sequence in which Oddjob knocks Double-0 Seven unconscious during his romantic interlude with Jill Masterson in his suite at the Fountainbleau Hotel, Harold Sakata - a professional wrestler by trade before becoming an actor - struck Sean Connery for real.

The Bond actor suffered a back injury as a result and was sent home to recover. However, he did not return to the set until he had renegotiated his salary with the producers. When he resumed filming, his pay for playing Double-0 Seven had been increased and he received 5% of the box office gross for Goldfinger and his remaining Eon Bond films.

Sadly, it highlighted the actor's concern that he was not being paid enough to be the face of the Bond franchise; he later disputed the legality of the agreement in 1984 when claiming back pay from Eon Productions.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
