20 Things You Didn’t Know About Goldfinger (1964)

The filmmakers had approached Shirley Anne Field and Joan Collins for the brief but memorable role of Jill Masterson, but they both declined it.

Although Benedict Cumberbatch’s mother, Wanda Ventham was also considered for the role, Harry Saltzman cast Shirley Eaton instead after she agreed to do the nude scenes if they were filmed tastefully.

Nevertheless, almost all of Eaton’s dialogue was dubbed by actress, Nikki van der Zyl (who was also Gert Fröbe’s voice coach during production), except for her whispered line to James Bond: “Not too early”.

Similarly, in the film’s opening and ending title sequences, as well as its posters, the golden girl was portrayed by Margaret Nolan, who played Bond’s masseuse, Dink in Miami, but received far less media attention than Shirley Eaton did!

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
